Rabbits teeth

These incisors are not growing properly and will need either regular trimming with a dental cutting drill every 4 to 6 weeks or permanent removal, if the back teeth are normal. Rabbit incisor teeth grow continuosly at a rate of approximately 2 mm a week. In the end this rabbits owner went for neutering now, trimming of the teeth for a few months then permanent removal of the incisors.
This is a photograph of 4 of the 6 incisors removed from this rabbit. Rabbits have 4 incisors in the top part of the mouth arranged in two pairs one behind the other. The ones at the back are called peg teeth and have been removed but not placed in the photograph.

When you look at these teeth you can see how they curl round and special instruments are needed to remove them. The teeth at the top of the photograph are the top incisors and the lower incisors are below. The gums are closed after the teeth are removed to stop food getting in there.
