Other Pet Mammals

There are many other species of mammal kept as pets, albeit less commonly. Each of them has very different and quite specialist requirements and we are happy to advise new owners or potential owners of the disadvantages and advantages of caring for them as pets.

What Other Species Do People Keep?

Some people chose to keep certain species of exotic pet due a genuine interest in them, others do so out of novelty. We strongly advise against choosing an exotic species due to its rarity or novelty and hope that all new owners would do their research. It is necessary to do this to ensure that the animal's health and welfare are catered for and to reduce the risks of any disease or injury in owners. Please be aware that ownership of some species is tightly controlled due to wildlife trade laws or their presence on the Dangerous Wild Animals Act (1976) list.

Species people are known to keep include:

  • Skunks
  • Raccoons and Coatis
  • Otters, meerkats, mongoose and weasels
  • Bats
  • Palm civets, Bintarong and Genets
  • Lesser tenrecs
  • Foxes
  • Porcupines
  • Raccoon dogs
  • Maras
  • Armadillos
